Kalos Brosca

Hero of Ferelden

Though life has been hard for Kalos, that's only served to make him hungry for it - it's nigh impossible to pull the dwarf into despair. Having escaped the vicious caste of Orzammar, Kalos can finally live up to his empathetic urges on the surface, free from the society that punished it. He's ready to choose his own path in life, but that may not be as easy as he thinks.

History

On the streets of Dust Town, Kalos was raised to learn one simple truth: you do anything you can to stay alive. Thus, he and his sister Rica found themselves no other choice than to serve the crime lord Beraht to keep their family afloat.

During these often ruthless endeavors, Kalos couldn't help but find his sympathy enticed. He'd find small ways to mitigate the damage of his directives, and against his better judgment, these would eventually become full-on transgressions - at his most daring, Kalos spares the life of a merchant he was sent to kill.

His old friend Leske warned these indulgences would get them killed. Kalos supposed it was true. It was only a matter of time before that would come to pass - but before it could, Kalos was conscripted into the Grey Wardens' service, and whisked away to Ostagar.

Nature

Despite his cutthroat criminal past, Kalos seems oddly friendly. He's playful and casual, making jokes and not taking himself or others too seriously. He grew up in a society where being nice got you shanked, but on the surface he can finally indulge his kind nature and tries to exert it any way he can.

Kalos' entire life had been defined by the circumstances of his birth. His easy-going and callow demeanor belies a deep yearning for control - though he'd hate to let anyone know it, Kalos is obssessed in trying to prove himself different from what his past may suggest. He'd resort to anything if it meant subverting those expectations.

It's in this complex one would find Kalos to be quite selfish, despite his good intentions. Though once brash and headstrong in these attempted "corrections", age and experience have since then evened Kalos out into someone more mature and thoughtful.

Status

Kalos is a trained killer - he knows his way around a dagger and how best to send it through someone. His methods are clean and efficient, if a bit flashy at times. Zevran jokes that in another life, he would have made an excellent Crow.

Bonds

Morrigan

Cruel, guarded, and foolhardy: Kalos falls for Morrigan not in spite of who she is, but because of it. The two love each other in their entirety with no pretense, and their parallels run deep. They'll hold each other in their hearts until the day they die.

Zevran

Kalos and Zevran are thick as thieves, connecting over their shared line of work and light-hearted natures in spite of it. He tries to reassure Zevran that despite their unsavory pasts, they're now finally free to make their own way in life.

Wynne

Kalos regards Wynne quite fondly. She takes on the role of his mentor, and even if it often results in a good finger-wagging, he's grateful for her guidance. Kalos turns to Wynne first for counsel - even if her lecturing grates on him at times.

Leliana

Although initially off put by her, Leliana's struggle to reconcile her two lives resonates deeply with Kalos. He sees himself in her, and it's for this reason he's so deeply defensive on Leliana's behalf - at times, he projects a little too strongly onto her.

Shale

At first, Shale found Kalos to be annoying and too curious by half. Over time, his constant prodding became a comfort for the golem who had spent so long in silence. Kalos in turn enjoys learning about Shale for who she is, rather than what she is.

Oghren

Proximity breeds familiarity, and the saying goes true for the two dwarves. Kalos has no trouble trading quips with Oghren and tries to keep his drunken rowdiness in check, though his effectiveness on that front is at best debatable.

Sten

Despite Kalos having saved his life, Sten still held a low opinion of the dwarf, often criticizing his capacity to lead. Sten's brusque and taciturn nature led the two to argue often. They may not always agree, but Sten respects that Kalos stands up to him.

Alistair

Alistair's friendship was once dear to Kalos, but sparing Loghain left the two estranged. Time apart and hard feelings have soured their relationship, but in the end, Kalos is still quietly grateful for what they once had - and hopes that Alistair is, too.

Loghain

Kalos and Loghain are not friends, but they do have an agreement: they'll do whatever it takes to save Ferelden. He's happy to keep the Teryn at arm's length, but doesn't actively antagonize him - Kalos feels unfit to judge, given his own past.
