Marian Hawke

Champion of Kirkwall

Severe and sardonic Hawke is the begrudging protector of Kirkwall, and a wholly unconventional one at that: she's rude, ill-tempered, and prone to anger. Thing is, she has a lot to fight for. The unrelenting tragedy that has defined Hawke's life has left her jaded, but with the support of her found family, she strives to make the most of what remains.

History

Hawke grew up in Lothering. She was dutiful in her youth, helping to safeguard her family in any way she could. Her parents made it a point to look after her siblings, as well as the other local kids her age.

Following Malcom's death, the household fell on Hawke's shoulders. Helpless at the reigns, Leandra urged Hawke to step in and serve as head of the family. It's her natural taking to this role that leaves Leandra entirely dependant on Hawke.

In the wake of the Blight, Hawke takes matters into her own hands to get her family into Kirkwall and out of poverty. After resorting to servitude alongside her brother to gain entry, Hawke resolves there's nothing she wouldn't do to protect the family she had left.

Nature

Although she puts on a gruff front, Hawke is in truth fiercely protective of those she loves. She has violent ways of exhibiting her anger, a clear penchant for picking fights, and is hot-headed enough to throw down at a moment's notice.

As a person, Hawke may seem inscrutable. She's cagey, doesn't trust readily, and won't divulge much of her personal feelings. Still, Hawke does care, even if she's awful at showing it.

Despite her love for them, Hawke takes umbrage at any criticism from her family, fatigued from her efforts to provide. She's had her fill of people either expecting too much of her or treating her with pure animosity.

After the events in Kirkwall, Hawke is noticeably more calm, collected, and hesitant in battle. She fears her own magic ability and worries she'll eventually fall prey to its power.

Status

Hawke is known to harness incredible magical might, and is a talented mage in her own right. Even when her emotions run so high as to threaten losing control, it only serves to enhance the strength of her destructive spells.

Bonds

Merrill

When Hawke is ready to act reckless, it's Merrill who steadies her - and when Merrill forgets that she, too, is fallible, it's Hawke who pulls her from the brink. Merrill falls in love with the gentle heart Hawke tries to hide, and Hawke gives it to her in whole.

Varric

Varric jokes over what Hawke would do without him. Truth is, she really doesn't know. Their familiarity runs deep, and their genuine affection for each other even more so. She truly feels like she can tell Varric anything - even her ugliest thoughts.

Carver

As befits siblings, the two Hawkes are almost always locked in some petty squabble. Even so, they'd both sooner take a killing blow than let each other come to harm. As much as they've changed in their time apart, their bond will always remain true.

Aveline

As Guard Captain, Aveline is constantly pulling Hawke out of trouble, much to their shared chagrin. But for how much they butt heads, they make up for in fierce loyalty to one another. Aveline was Hawke's first true friend, and one she holds dear.

Fenris

Hawke is neither scared or hostile towards Fenris, despite being a mage. In turn, Fenris treats Hawke with a ton of respect. As different as their outlooks are, they find comfort in the friendship they've made, in spite of the occasional heated argument.

Isabela

Isabela tries to not take Hawke too seriously, and sometimes, that's just what she needs. Isabela's taken it upon herself to make sure Hawke doesn't get too worked up in her more cantankerous fits, and Hawke readily shows her the same patience.

Bethany

The death of Bethany haunts Hawke. Her failure to protect her sister only compounds the guilt she feels in resenting her family. Years ago, the two sisters shared a close relationship, but now Hawke only finds turmoil in her memory.

Anders

Hawke was once taken in by Anders' overtures of revolution, happy to pit her anger towards institutions that deserve it. Nowadays, Hawke bristles at the mere thought of the mage. She's unsure if she'll ever find it in herself to forgive him.

Sebastian

As much as Anders' deception angered Hawke, Sebastian's immediate turn against all of Kirkwall drew her deepest ire. It would be an exaggeration to say they were especially close, but whatever they once had is now fraught with rancorous outrage.
